Sometimes, they really are watching you.

Seen in Times Square, this NYPD surveillance tower is called Sky Watch, and contains digital cameras, a spotlight, unspecified “sensors,” and a police officer to run it all. From 25 feet in the air, it provides the ability to watch (and record) everything in the area from on high. Since it's on a trailer, it's portable and can be deployed wherever needed.

Apparently, NYPD has been using these things for a couple of years. The Border Patrol uses similar units. They come in two models; this one appears to be the “Sentinel,” which lacks the gun ports. So, there's that. Plus, I guess he has to come back down to use the bathroom.

I guess it probably works, but am I alone in finding it a bit creepy?

Mississippi Bans Red-Light Cameras Mississippi has passed a law banning red light cameras. No new cameras will go up, and all existing ones must come down by October. Bravo. Meanwhile, New Jersey, where I live, is adding towns to the list for new red light cameras. Other places are adding them as well. That's not so good. Laws were meant to be enforced by people, not computers. And they certainly weren't meant to be a source of revenue at the expense of safety, which is what these things are – even more so than the rest of traffic enforcement. Do you think they make...

Imitation and Flattery Well, it's happened – I have a cheap ripoff! As you may know, I have an iPhone application called ThisDay, which shows “today in history,” holidays, famous birthdays, etc. The database for this took a while to put together, what with editing for interestingness, verifying things, writing the actual entries, etc. Now, someone has released a cheap, half-assed copy with almost exactly the same name (“This Day,” with the space).
